First, The Matter of Quality: Free Press Release Submission vs. Paid

High-quality (and high-cost) press releases sites such as PR Newswire do, of course, draw much more traffic from Google News than the free press release distributors. Also, the free press release sites tend to have advertisements that may distract readers from your message or point them to a competing website.

My personal feelings on the question of whether you should submit your press release to tons of free sites or just a few paid sites is that if you cannot afford the paid sites, well, there you go. But prepare yourself emotionally to not expect the world because the results will not be as effective as they would be if you used a paid resource. AND if you are using paid resources, why would you not submit to the free resources as well? More links, more coverage, and hopefully some repeat hits on the same journalists so they are more likely to pick up your press release and run with it or remember the name of your brand later on down the road when you distribute a new release.

On To The Issue of Quantity

How often should you distribute a new press release? Honestly, as often as you can afford it. That is, unless you reach a point where for some legitimate reason you no longer need to promote your company.

I recommend sending out at least one press release per week. A great way to plan this out is to determine what you’ve got coming up that you can promote and take a look at your events and news and turn each of those into an attention-grabbing press release.

I personally love to use a press release template design for distributing direct to journalists via email. I think it helps make your brand more memorable and it also helps you stand out from the crowd. If you do create a design that houses your releases, be sure the content is still copy/pastable, otherwise you’ll hurt yourself more than help.

Back to Quality, but from a Content Perspective

The point of a press release from your perspective is to promote your business; but from the perspective of the reader, you need to show why your business solves a problem that relates to what’s currently going on in the world.

And Away You Go!

Here are some free and paid distribution services that you can consider. A note on the free ones, be sure to read my other blog “You Get What You Pay For” (but do what you gotta do).
